COLLEGE BASKETBALL UPDATE
In your local college basketball update, the Southern States Athletic Conference men’s and women’s basketball championships continue thru Saturday in Rome. Shorter’s Lady Hawks defeated Southern Wesleyan 59-53 in opening round action yesterday afternoon at Darlington School and will go on to face Southern Poly today at 2 p.m. at the Forum in downtown Rome. The winner of that game will go to the championship game on Saturday. Shorter’s Hawks were knocked out of the SSAC tournament by Auburn-Montgomery yesterday as the Senators beat the Hawks 62-59 at the Forum. 95.7 FM The Ridge will follow the Shorter Lady Hawks as long as they remain in the SSAC women’s tournament. WLAQ AM 1410 will broadcast Georgia Tech men’s basketball on Saturday afternoon against Virginia Tech. Pre-game programming will begin at 3:30 p.m.; the game will begin at 4 p.m.

LOCAL COLLEGE BASEBALL: SHORTER ON THE ROAD, BERRY OFF THIS WEEKEND
In your local college baseball update, the Shorter Hawks will be in Central, South Carolina this weekend for a three game series with Southern Wesleyan. The teams will face each other in a single game at 5 p.m. this evening and a double header on Saturday at 1 p.m. Berry is off until Tuesday night when they travel to Birmingham, Alabama to take on Birmingham Southern.

LOCAL COLLEGE SOFTBALL UPDATE
In your local college softball update, the Shorter Lady Hawks will be in Montgomery, Alabama to face Faulkner today at 3 p.m. and Auburn Montgomery on Saturday at 2 p.m. Berry’s Lady Vikings will be in Memphis, Tennessee this weekend for the Rhodes College Tournament. They’ll face LaGrange at 11 a.m. and Rhodes at 3 p.m. on Saturday. On Sunday, they’ll take on Rhodes again at 9 a.m. and Millikin at 3 p.m.

ATLANTA HAWKS TO HOST GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS AT PHILIPS TONIGHT
In your NBA report, the Atlanta Hawks will host the Golden State Warriors tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Philips Arena. The game will be televised on Sport South.

THRASHERS BLAST NEW YORK ISLANDERS
The Atlanta Thrashers defeated the New York Islanders 6-3 last night at the Philips Arena. The Thrashers will be on the road to face the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. The game will be televised on Sport South. ATLANTA BRAVES BEAT PITTSBURGH PIRATES AT SPRING TRAINING
The Atlanta Braves beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-2 in Spring Training action yesterday at Lake Buena Vista, Florida. The Braves will host the Washington Nationals today at 1:05 p.m.

PERKINS SELECTED AS ROME HIGH HEAD FOOTBALL COACH
Franco Perkins has been named the new head football coach at Rome High School. He replaces Sid Fritts, who will coach Elbert County next season.
