GHC INAUGURAL BASKETBALL TEAM MEMBERS SIGN LETTER OF INTENT
A dream that many leaders in the local athletic community have had for literally decades became even more of a reality today as members of Georgia Highlands College’s inaugural basketball team convened on the campus to sign letters of intent for the 2012/2013 season.
Recruits from the team mainly hail from the Northwest Georgia region, but the group includes players from as far away as New York State. The only local signee, at least at this point, is former Armuchee High School standout Matt Catanzano, who was named to the Region 7-AA All Region 1st team in his Senior year and holds the school record for 3-pt baskets in a career (210) and season (85). The other players on the team are Vantrail Commings from Douglas County High School, Seth Curlee from Excel Christian Academy in Cartersville, JR Davis from Cartersville High School, Rashon Dumas from Chattahoochee High School in Johns’ Creek, Damon Mitchell from Marietta High School, Femi Ojuolape from Lithia Springs High School, Dimychael Ross and Cody Washington from Allatoona High School, Neil Shah from North Cobb High School, and Matt Welch from New York Mills High School.
Coach Phil Gaffney said “This means a lot to the school and community, as Georgia Highlands has never had athletics in the past. This will be an opportunity for the college and the whole community to come out to support a team.” Gaffney went on to say how excited he is about the quality of the players for this inaugural team. “We really feel like we not only have landed really good players, but also good people and students, as well.”
GHC’s basketball season opens on November 1, 2012. Georgia Highlands is part of the Georgia College Athletic Association of the National Junior College Athletics Association.
