STEPPED UP PATROLS ANTICIPATED OVER MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND

State troopers expect heavy traffic on Georgia’s roads over the Memorial Day holiday weekend and are stepping up their patrols in anticipation of that. The 78-hour Memorial Day holiday travel period begins at 6 pm this evening and continues thru midnight on Memorial Day.

FLOYD EMS OBSERVES EMS WEEK

Tomorrow will mark the conclusion of the national observation of Emergency Medical Services (or EMS) Week. The observation has been made locally by Floyd EMS, who has been honoring its employees with special barbecue lunches all week long. Floyd EMS Director Bud Owens adds that EMTs have also been doing volunteer work around the community this week, something they do all year long.

RED CROSS SEEKING VOLUNTEERS FOR OKLAHOMA TORNADO RECOVERY

Recovery continues in Oklahoma where an EF-4 tornado struck the Oklahoma City suburbs on Monday. Volunteers are currently being recruited to provide help to the area affected by the tornado, according to Sarah Egan, Emergency Services Program Manager for the Northwest Georgia Chapter of the American Red Cross.

NORTHSIDE SWIM CENTER TO OPEN ON SATURDAY

Memorial Day weekend is commonly considered the unofficial start of the summer. As such, many people will be wanting to hit the water this weekend. If you want to go swimming, there’s good news for you! The Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Authority will open the Northside Swim Center for the 2013 swim season tomorrow, according to an RFPRA media release.

UNEMPLOYMENT DOWN IN METRO ROME, NORTHWEST GEORGIA

The Georgia Department of Labor has reported that metro Rome’s unemployment rate declined to 8.5 percent in April, down from 8.9 percent in March and from 9.8 percent in April 2012.

The Northwest Georgia area is certainly no stranger to tornadoes such as the one that touched down in Oklahoma on Monday. There is no doubt that the news of the Oklahoma tornado struck a chord with those in Adairsville and parts of Gordon County who were hit by a tornado back on January 30^th. US Representative Tom Graves is a resident of Ranger, located in Gordon County. Graves believes that the people of Georgia’s 14^th Congressional District can relate to tornado victims in Oklahoma.

ARTS COMMUNITY MOURNS THE LOSS OF DEBBY BROWN

The local arts community is mourning the loss of a friend. Debby Brown passed away on Tuesday night at the age of 60. She worked for a number of years at the Chieftains Museum/Major Ridge Home. She was also active with the Rome Little Theatre and was a colorful storyteller with the Seven Hills Tellers.

You’ve heard about it in national headlines – the IRS has been taking a lot of heat lately, with accusations that it has been singling out conservative groups such as the Tea Party. The IRS has since admitted to doing so, according to US Representative Tom Graves. In a Tuesday morning interview on WLAQ AM 1410′s Good Morning Rome, Graves contended that the IRS has acted as a ‘political bully’.
